My friend Lisa asked me how my blog was going last week. My first thought was “what blog?” I’ve started and killed a few. Only this one remains.
My second thought was “Oh yeah, I need to work on that”. “That” being this blog.
One of the reasons it has remained perpetually blank is because I didn’t know what it should be about. Do I keep it strictly portfolio-based? Do I try and find some sort of niche and monetize the blog? Do I stick to a theme?
Questions like these, based on sage advice from professional bloggers, have left me completely paralyzed and unwilling to write about anything. Variety is the spice of life and I like life very spicy.
So I had to ask myself: Why would people read my blog? Frankly, I have no idea. Unless you’re my mom (hi mom) or a friend who has told me you like reading what I write (hi Christine), I don’t know what this blog could offer you.
Honestly, I don’t want to write a blog for someone else.
So a post has miraculously appeared because I’ve decided that this blog is for me.
Writing is my thing. It has always been for me. Somehow I ended up doing it as a job and I have a love/hate relationship with that fact. I love that I get paid to do something I’m fairly good at. I hate that I have little control over what I write, and that along the way I have lost writing as my thing.
I use writing to think, and to understand how I feel. I have big feelings and writing allows me to transfer them out of my head and on to paper (or screen). I haven’t done that in a very long time, and I miss it.
I need a place to talk about the things I love. I need a place to vent my spleen. I need an outlet where I don’t have to worry about tone of voice, SEO, or spelling mistakes. Basically, I need a little corner of the Internet to write about whatever I want, however I want, and not have to worry about whether or not it will pay my bills.
This is now that place, so I guess I can finally reply to Lisa and tell her that I’ve got the blog going, which is good because I’ve been ignoring her message for far too long now.
Welcome to my little corner of the Internet…
